Legislative Issues

The Public Affairs Committee of the NAC Board of Directors identifies legislative issues of interest to NAC members and those in the recreation and leisure-time food and beverage industry. This page lists current issues in the federal or state legislature, along with ways to impact legislation. Action alerts on important pending legislative issues are emailed to the NAC membership for their use.

Sample letters may be listed below, which can be sent to your legislators regarding a particular legislative issue. You may use our sample letters below, or customize them to your particular business.

If you do not know your legislators, type your zip code in the box below to be directed to a site that lists local, state and federal representatives.

Trans-fat legislation

12.05.06  The New York City Board of Health approved a ban on artificial trans-fats in city restaurants. Under the ban, all oils, margarines and vegetable shortenings that are used for frying and as spreads that contain trans-fats must be eliminated by July 1, 2007, except food that is being served to patrons in a manufacturer's original sealed package. New York City is the first major U.S. city to enact such a ban.

Other cities, counties and states are considering legislation regarding this issue. The National Restaurant Association has a state-by-state listing of potential trans-fat legislation here.

Many of NAC's supplier and manufacturer members are already voluntarily working towards limiting or eliminating trans-fats from their products. NAC encourages concession operators to discuss options and alternatives with their suppliers, and to contact their elected officials regarding this issue. Additional information on the trans-fat issue can be found at the Federal Drug Administration's web site: www.fda.gov/oc/initiatives/transfat/
